Editing

For our editing day we took it upon ourselves to use our time in a more productive way. For the first half of the day we went out to finish filming the last few parts of our commercial attempting to get a couple sounds and final shots established. That way we could have a set amount of content to use as we go to edit. However today once we finished our filming we dumped our material to continue our process we encountered a small issue with our technology. Pinnacle studios was down and was not functioning at all on any of the computers available to us. This set us back greatly as we already had our content organized and ready to be accumulated into one final file of our commercial. From here we felt very defeated as our full functioning plan was “shot down” by some faulty computers. We attempted to restart the computers, pinnacle studios, and the rest of the systems on the computer. However, even with the help of both my teachers, my fellow teammates and other students the program still wasn’t working. At this point we decided to give up and hope next class we could at least start our editing process.

Despite our setback we were still able to get some work done in planning. We sat down and very intently began to plan the next steps of our project. How we were going to go about the editing, the effects we wanted to use, and sound we wanted to add or take away from the videos. We also went a filmed some extra outdoor sounds plus some extra ones. For example, the opening of the gatorade bottle and the sound of kicking the soccer ball were all attempted to capture the sound of each. For those sounds if used, we decided to plan to edit them into the commercial by just hightening the sound. As well as recorded some actual clips of speaking parts in case voiceovers didn’t always work during the editing process.

For our next class we hope to achieve the following. Re-dump any footage from my phone (our filming device) onto the computer. Begin to edit the clips at least just putting them together. Decide what final clips fit cohesively into one so that our editing doesn’t look sloppy or ameture. Record alf add in voice overs or any diegetic/ non-diegetic sounds. Due to the fact that pinnacle studios was not working today and we were not able to even open it today we realize much of this may not be completed. For example, we still need to familiarize ourselves with the system itself and figure out how it works even with the steps we’ve already gotten to use it. Therefore we may encounter another setback which is making sure we understand how pinnacle studios works to them be able to use it and implement it properly into the use of our commercial.

Filming

For my filming process we took to the field of Fort Lauderdale High School. Our commercial was ok gatorade so we worked with my team member Macy Doyle to have an athlete as our soccer player to promote our gatorade. We went out to the field to get all of our action shots. Using my iphone 11 pro we filmed everything as we knew this phone is approved by cambridge and would be much easier to film with my phone than taking out a camera. It meant less liability and responsibility for us to handle. From then Macy changed into her soccer player outfit and had her dribble the soccer ball around the field having her shoot goals and pit goalie Ben Coleman. We had a couple missed shots that sadly hit us in the face. Yet we still accomplished all of our shots and were able to get most of the content we needed to compile a whole commercial.

My job in the commercial was as filmer. We hadn’t decided on me doing this position prior to going out to film but I felt as though I understood the content going into the commercial and could capture it well. As I used my own phone we didn’t have the use of a tripod which made our tracking shots a little bit more difficult. Also we had a penny board to make our tracking shots easier but on the grass it wasn’t functional and kept breaking. There was also a point where I was trying to get a cool shot of the soccer ball going in the goal and tripped backward over the net and fell. Another time of me trying to get a cool shot of the goal my phone rebounded hit me in the tooth and fell on the ground. My teammate Ben  also got hit in the face with a soccer ball but it’s all good because none of us were truly hurt in the process

Working with my teammates I feel was an experience, they all each contributed to the commercial however some more than others. Macy Doyle, as I said before contributed greatly and is basically the main star of our entire commercial. Ben Coleman also did really good job as our goalie listening to direction and even adding a slight bit of comedy to our commercial. However my third teammate Andrew I feel did not contribute too much to the comercial. I filmed, Macy and Ben started and Andrew mostly just walked around dazed and confused. Most direction he gave was either incorrect or didn’t make sense for the commercial. The one clip he was in is most likely unusable just making him and bystander taking the grade others worked for. I feel we all still worked really hard and put effort into this comercial and still have some tweaks to make but hope to fix that on our next day of filming. We know the editing process is going to be tough and for that reason are trying to get good content making out job and lives easier in the future.

Storyboard

Today in class we edited and finished our story board. We filled six panels (scenes) with the events that will be going on during the commercial. Each box/scene on the storyboard is worth 5 seconds, since the commercial is 30s and there are 6 boxes. In the first scene a girl is running while dribbling  a soccer ball. The camera angle for this scene is a tracking shot, followed by the sound of a crowd cheering in the background. The second panel consists of a zoom that leads to a medium close-up shot. This will be angle facing the girl as she takes a deep breath. For the third panel it will be a wide shot with a high angle of the girl shooting her shot. For the fourth box it will cutaway to a wide shot from behind the net of a girl scoring a goal, and then at the end the same girl bending down to put her hands on her knees. With this motion, it transitions to the girl lifting the Gatorade bottle out of the Gatorade cooler, which is scene five (also called an action match). Then for the final scene it will be the girl opening the Gatorade bottle with the satisfying click and then taking a fat sip of it. All of these noises will be enhanced to fit/match the storyboard.

The finished product with be all of these scenes combined. This storyboard is going to help us organize our commercial. It will also show us the necessary materials we will need to make the commercial the best it can be. The storyboard will most likely end up being refined to make our commercial even more smooth and have the best angles and transitions, but for now this is how it looks.

Editing Lesson Blog

Today our class learned the ways we checkout, check in, use, and edit with the cameras for our commercial. I found this to be a very lengthy process and realized how tedious it is to keep the order and ensure nothing is lost or broken. It was very specific in the steps taken for each action and what to do when working with partners in this process. For checking out the cameras we were told we needed to pick up one of the white slips in the cubby at the front of the classroom and fill it out with all of the needed information to them be able to check out equipment. Then on the same white slip to put the number of each piece of equipment we have that is subject to change each time we check out. Once you check it out you then have one day to use it and it’s due the day after. For example if it’s wednesday the camera and equipment is due back thursday rather than friday when the next class would be. Checking back in the equipment requires you to dump the footage from the sd card on the camera into your computer to then be able to edit it. All of our filming  must be done in one day and our editing has to be done in one day.

For the actual filming and use of the camera there are different ways to set it up and ways to ensure we use it properly. For example to charge the camera the screen on the side has to be closed so that the camera is turned off when charging. As well as, when starting to record the silver button is what starts and stops the camera rolling. We were given the tip to start filming a little bit before the actual take with the background movement so that when you start the actors it’s not caught on camera. As well as when finishing go a little long on the cottage so when editing you have space to edit out or keep some of the before and after. The set up on the camera is also very important as it catches the angles and what portrays the feeling of the takes. With the tripod we can increase the height and angle  of the camera or keep it stable depending on what shots we want and what’s happening in the scene. For my group we decided to use my iphone 11 pro and it’s camera quality is similar to that of the camera and doesn’t require us to pay a large amount of money if it’s damaged. In there we encountered the issue of the tripod as we felt it would be a good use for filing but we’re told there are adaptors for phones onto tripods which then solved our problem and led us to figure out the editing process.

For editing we were taught how to use pinnacle studios. Before actually editing out footage we need to dump and import it. The dumping was what I talked about earlier which we have to do before returning the camera. Dumping just takes footage from the camera and puts it on the computer to then transfer into pinnacle studios. After dumping we need to import the footage into pinnacle studios itself. After opening pinnacle studios software we need to select the editing option at the top of the screen to then click import on the top right of the screen. After that a page will pop up where we then have to click the plus sign next to desktop click on a folder that we previously created when dumping the footage and then select only the footage you want to edit. Once there the footage it ready to be edited and used however there are certain tracks for each aspect being added to the footage. For example, AV track 1 is for titles AV track 2 is for the raw footage itself and AV track 3 is for sound like music voiceovers etc. Adding and removing sound is most important for our group as we will be using voiceovers and following that with some effects which can all be added and enhanced in pinnacle studios.

Planning

Today my group and I organized our commercial project. This helped us make a schedule to create a project that is well time-managed. It also made it so we had a better understanding on what our commercial was going to look like. For the plan we included: props, costumes, schedules, locations, and a backup plan for if something went wrong. Planning the commercial will help keep us on track and have less of a struggle putting the project together once we have all the components. It also makes sure we have all the components ready for our filming day. Without the plan, we could forget a prop, not manage time well, do the wrong thing on the wrong day, etc. The plan will insure we get everything done correctly and on time. This plan also will contribute greatly to our storyboard we have to eventually make when we are beginning our pre-filming process.
1) Props
-Soccer ball, cleats, Gatorade cooler, a bottle of Gatorade, a camera
2) Costumes
-Soccer jersey, soccer shorts, soccer socks, cleats, hair tie, pre wrap
3) Schedule
10/10 > Planning Period
10/14 > Storyboarding
10/22 > Filming
10/24 > Editing
4) Location
-Soccer field at FLHS
5) Back-up Plan
-In the event that it rains outside, we will still be doing the exact same thing because the rain would actually add to our dramatic effect + it would help with the “sweat” that is going to be on my face in the commercial when I’m running down the field with a soccer ball, so it wouldn’t change anything it actually might help
-If one of our star members or cameraman are absent the day of filming, we will replace them with the next best runner up and/or eliminate the use of them in the film, unless we are allowed to use another student from our class not in our group to take their spot

Research Conventions & Codes

As our commercial Macy Doyle, Ben Coleman, Andrew Stern and I have chosen to sell Gatorade. We chose gatorade because we feel it would be a very fun and somewhat east commercial to portray. From our research we’ve seen that many gatorade commercials are typically around 30 seconds long, just like any other commercial but being that they are a sports centered company most of the commercials they produced are centered around athletes. For example a track star or a soccer player on the field and then at the end pop up a picture of their logo. Or even something as simple as a celebrity endorsing the products making it likeable by consumers. There are also typically voiceovers in gatorade and most sports commercials in general. Many of these features although not completely original are factors we want to include in our gatorade commercials as they are very key features of sports commercials.

For our commercial we plan on creating something similar or resembling of a gatorade commercial but still keeping it original and selling the product. Just as a typical gatorade commercial we want to include a sports scene of some sort. Either a soccer team practicing for a game a basketball game or a track star. In the surrounding area we have a small team cheering on with the large gatorade jug typically full of water or electrolyte drink. This would be just to put the name out there not for actual use. This jug would also be accompanied by the small gatorade paper cups. Next to that would be pictured a large cooler full of ice and a variety of bottles of gatorade. A team of players or a runner would run up after a big win or exhausting training session, deeply reach into the cooler and pull out a perfectly nice and cold bottle of gatorade. The person would take a nice sip, feel refreshed, and continue on with the training from their satisfying gatorade. The commercial would include voiceovers upbeat audio and effective camera angles all used to portray the message. We also have other idea yet this is our main one yet is still subject to change.

We feel as thought this commercial would be very effective in explaining to the reader very explicitly what our intention as are and why we are trying to sell. We don’t want to make an intensely emotional connection with the reader but still want to entice them and make them emphasize with us feeling as thought they’ve been in that same prostitution before. The idea is to relate with the audience while also making them want to buy the products. We want to portray this through the use of the acting in the comercial the exhaustion and the feeling is not wanting to be there but pushing through and getting it done with the help of gatorade. As well as making the gatorade look appealing itself with the dripping water and the mouth going on the bottle hearing it flowing down the theorist of the athlete and the sound of refreshment. Almost that of what you hear in a soda commercial. The use of sound camera angles and acting will be very important in this comercial just like any other and aspiring to sell the product while creating a very convincing and appealing commercial.

Introductory

Hi my name is Adriana Garcia, I'm 15 years old and I live in Fort Lauderdale Florida. I go to Fort Lauderdale High School by day and by night I am a dancer and participate In marshal arts. I was born on November 17th 2003 in Cleveland, Ohio and moved to Weston, Florida when i was just a couple months old. In Weston I lived with my grandparents for a few years until me and my parents moved out and came to live in Fort Lauderdale. Some cool facts about my time in Ohio and Weston are, When I lived and visited Ohio it was very cold so my mom would put a hat on my ears to keep me warm. Well she didn't exactly always put it on right and for a couple moths of my life I had folded ears. I also learned basic human functions like walking and "talking" living with my grandparents and have come up with some oh so famous catchphrases my parents still taunt me with today.

My family is from Puerto Rico making me a bilingual baby learning english at school and Spanish at home. Making my developing childhood only a little bit harder than usual. At the age of three my parents placed me in Karate which, to thus day I still do and am now a third degree blackbelt. I've learned many self defense skill in karate but also learned respect and leadership, self-control, honor, honesty, and so many more. The studio has shaped my life in many ways which I am very grateful for. I also recently, since 6th grade, have gotten into the preforming art of dance. Every Monday and Tuesday I go to dance and learn many different styles such as contemporary, jazz, tap, ballet, and even acrobatics. The concludes my everyday lifestyle but for my future I really want to pursue other things.

My interest in life for the future for me are pretty simple. I have 3 different areas of study I want to pursue. My top one being business, just like my dad I want to open and run a very successful business centralized around either cosmetology (makeup and skincare) or culinary arts (a restaurant). That leads me to my two other fields of study cosmetology and culinary arts. Cosmetology such as makeup has always been something I enjoyed doing and thought why not pursue a career in something I love so much. Culinary arts as well, I've been cooking and baking with my mom and grandma for as long as I can remember and carrying on a passion of al the women in my family would be such an honor to be able to pay homage to them every day. All in all, I just want to say, I see myself as a very hard worker and just like any other student I am not afraid to say I am a procrastinator yet I always turn my homework in on time. However, if i set my mind to anything it will get done and will get done right.
